Sports Team Training Breaks

If you’re involved with a sporting club that needs some time away from all distractions to focus on reviewing your game plan and building up your team spirit, we’ve got a special package for you!

Adventure West has teamed up with Go Explore Hostel on Clare Island to provide the perfect location and atmosphere for the task.  As you depart the mainland, the sense of bonding is likely to begin the minute your team steps onto the ferry at Roonagh Harbour and begins the crossing of Clew Bay to the island.

Go Explore Hostel can cater for up to 42 people in en-suite rooms catering for between 6 & 8 per room. They also operate a B&B located 8 minutes walk from the hostel that can cater for leaders if required.

The hostel’s Sailor’s Bar can provide a wide variety of dishes to suit your team’s needs. We can cater for high carb & protein needs for post training dinner and many more options.

At Sailor’s Bar we can organise entertainment for your team so they can let loose and wind down after a hard day’s training. There is no better way for a team to gel together than to break sweat during a day of hard training followed by a few beers in the evening with some good tunes.

Clare Island Ferry Company operates an all year round service to the island with two 96 passenger vessels so getting to the island and back is no problem.

We can tailor a package to your specific needs. Here is a suggestion:

• Return Ferry

• 1 night Accommodation in Go Explore Hostel incl a light breakfast

• 1 lunch (soup & sambos)

• Team building activity

• Use of local GAA pitch

• 1 evening meal (soup & main course)

• Evening entertainment at Sailor’s Bar

Price: €85* per person (based on 18 people and standard menu – discounts may be applied for larger groups & menu may be upgraded).   See for more details

The Island

Clare Island is unique among all of Ireland’s Island’s in that its topography and varied landscapes provides for every level of training activity.  Between climbing Knockmore Mountain at 1520 feet and running through tracks of undulating hills and loops, the island has the perfect – natural – facilities to provide good interval workouts.

The Training Pitch

Clare Island is proud of it football pitch which has a good footing and plenty of space. It is available to teams and clubs for training sessions. The local teams are also available for training games if required.

Team Building Activities

This is the part where we at Adventure West come into play!  To add a new dimension to your team-work, we provide activities that wouldn’t normally be part of your team’s training regime.  Adventure activities to challenge your players mentally and physically, while encouraging bonding and guaranteeing lots of fun and laughter.

Activities on offer are

• Coasteering

• Raft-building & racing

• Snorkelling

• Orienteering with adventure activities at 4 locations along the route

The Beach

Clare Island GAA has won the All-Island’s football championship more times than any other island. This is due in part to the lack of injuries over the course of the season which the club attributes to their cool down routine. This involves all players going straight from the pitch to the ice-cold water of the beach to soak those fatigued muscles.  It might be a tad uncomfortable, but it’s certainly effective!  The beach is only 200m away from the pitch.
